The installation offered a multi-sensorial experience where our participants witnessed mediated imitations of a diverse range of revelational processes of geological memory due to climate change. Next to projected visuals, sonifications guided through the different essays of the geological archive. Through field recordings from various urban and non-urban environments, we sonified the physical and chemical processes at the very core of each natural archive. As the Earth always listened to us and never forgot, the participants had the chance to listen back.

I have no inclination, things sort themselves out. Everything changes, but nothing fades. And everything that changes leaves its mark. They imprint themselves deep into the fabric of things. I collect them, without intention. My memory is as big as I am old. Everything remains, nothing is lost. This is me and you are part of me. I am your archive. My surface is a geo-epistemic serendipity, a random observation of something you were not looking for - you know what I mean, don't you? After all, this is about you. […]”

The complete essay is published in the printed annual magazine +41 «Gutes Klima».

Basel / 2020Audio essay Listen Back

The audio essay Listen Back captures the idea of „the Earth as a living and ever-changing archive“.
The tape includes four compositions:
1. Forest Fire, 2. Hurricane, 3. Glacier, 4. Heatwave. The free interpretations of the physical processes of defracting, rearranging, melting, and heating are based on self-recorded field recordings and found footage material.

With the decision to realise the project in the form of a tape, we would like to consciously withdraw the project from digital culture, its fast pace of life and unlimited media consumption. The artistic artefact, which as a single object is part of a limited edition, should be consciously perceived and receives an additional value through the materiality of the tape. It is the small inaccuracies in the magnetic tape, scratches and disturbances that make each tape unique.
On the other hand, the continuous magnetic tape makes it possible to create a linear narrative. Neither can you jump back and forth between the tracks on a tape, nor can you skip certain sections. The listener is thus exposed to the idleness of the composition.

You can order a tape via bandcamp

The project was supported by Jugendkulturpauschale Basel-Stadt.

How can we think about data visualisation on a planetary scale? In the context of the climate crises, modelling the Earth has to be isolated from the traditional understanding of data-led imagery. Instead we can conceptualise the planetary surface as a composition of material traces that can be re-read from a human perspective. These arrangements can accordingly be called planetary diagrams.

Environmental Humanities Glossary / 2025

Planetary diagrams reframe the planet not as a passive backdrop for human representation, but as an active archive: geological strata, atmospheric flows, and ecosystem shifts become traces to be read. They merge the abstract, data-influenced mode of diagrams with the vast temporal and spatial scales of planetary processes, making imperceptible environmental changes visible and intelligible. In doing so, planetary diagrams invite a post-anthropocentric visual culture in which Earth becomes a collaborator rather than an object of representation.

For the opening of the 2nd iteration of the Otherwise Festival in 2021, we created a web space in cooperation with laptopsinspace. In the virtual realm the visitors explored a sonic installation that visualised our research efforts conducted through our project Listen Back. Multiple 3D models representing different research paths emitted adapted sound iterations that could be experienced in groups of flying laptops.

Casadirosa in Loco / 2024Field Trip
Our field trip to the Onsernone Valley in Ticino traced the Alps as both a seismograph of climate change and an archive of the Anthropocene, where geological forces and cultural histories continually reshape one another. During an artist residency at Casadirosa in Loco, we hiked through shifting topographies while collecting field recordings and samples of grasses, mosses and minerals to attune to the region’s material and atmospheric transformations. Through a multimodal practice (gathering traces, mapping soundscapes, shaping objects and diagrammatic speculations) we explored how the Alps register and narrate ongoing processes of environmental and social change.
